Hornet Orientation + Welcome Week

A great start to an unforgettable college experience

Hornet Orientation is an exciting 3-day program for new students at Emporia State University! We’ll help you a transition into college life and set the stage for academic and social success. There will be events, games, prizes, free food, free SWAG and MORE! You'll also participate in guided tours of your campus classes, learn about student organizations and support services and be hosted by some of the best student leaders on campus. You do not want to miss the fun!

If you are a TradPlus, transfer or veteran student, we’ll be hosting an event especially for you later in August. You are also invited to participate in these events too!

Hornet Orientation Schedule

THURSDAY, AUGUST 15
  • Playfair - The Ultimate Icebreaker** | 8 - 9:30 p.m. | MU Webb Hall
    Playfair is totally unlike anything you have ever experienced. It’s entertaining! It’s fun! It’s the perfect way to meet new people! Playfair is a team-building experience that you will never forget. Meet new friends, hang out with campus student leaders, and make memories that will last a lifetime! Water
  • Wishes On Wooster | 9:30 - 10:30 p.m. | Wooster Lake
    Send your wishes across the waters of Wooster Lake during this nighttime event. What is your greatest wish for your first year at ESU?
FRIDAY, AUGUST 16
  • Mini Majors + Learning Communities** | 9:30 - 11:30 a.m. | MU Webb HallEnjoy coffee, donuts, assorted pastries, and fruit before meeting the faculty in your chosen major’s department, learn more about classes and meet some of your classmates. For undeclared majors, you’ll have one-on-one time with professional staff from the Student Advising Center.
  • Class Tours | 11:30 a.m. | ESU Campus
    Current student leaders from the Fraternity & Sorority Life community will take you around campus so you can find your classes before the first day of school.
  • Fraternity & Sorority Life Ice Cream Social | 11:30 a.m. - 12:45 p.m. | MU West Lobby
    Stop by and visit with members of Fraternity & Sorority Life to learn more about how you can “Find Your Hive” and join the community to meet new friends, practice leadership skills and discover opportunities that will enhance your college experience.
  • Can We Talk?** | 2 p.m. | MU Webb Hall
    Dr. Lori Bednarchik
    Communication is a skill, and like any other skill it needs to be learned and practiced. With a PhD in interpersonal and relational communication, and decades of personal experience with healthy (and unhealthy) relationships, Lori will provide you with communication strategies and tips that are grounded in research, but presented to you using fun, relevant, practical, and real-life examples. She will give you specific and practical skills to effectively communicate with your partner and/or friends and teach you how to set and respect your own, and other’s boundaries.
  • Open Offices | 3:30 - 5 p.m. | ESU Campus
    Have questions about your financial aid?  Need help with your schedule? You have time to cross some things off your list now. Visit Financial Aid, the Student Advising Center, Career Services, and more of the open offices during this time.
  • Hornet Games | 7 p.m. | Student Rec Parking Lot
    Get ready to compete! The ESU Resident Assistants will be leading teams through challenges for this night of fun!
  • FREE Money Game Show | 9 p.m. | MU Webb Hall
    In the FREE Money Game Show everyone participates! Have a chance to win up to $500 CASH in this FUN trivia game covering music, movies, TV, and more. There will be multiple winners throughout the game while professional comedian Mickey Housley hosts each round! From Disney, Broadway, Rap, and Rock to Netflix, Hip Hop, Nickelodeon and more, there will be many chances to answer and WIN!!! Brought to you by the Union Activities Council!

SATURDAY, AUGUST 17
  • Dig Into Diversity** | 11 a.m. | MU Center for Student Involvement Lounge
    At the root of diversity, equity, and inclusion is an understanding of identity and understanding. Through understanding more about your identity and the identities of others, coming to appreciate your experiences, and learning to engage in dialogue you are better able to navigate the spaces you are in, be an advocate, and create positive change. This session will focus on the foundations of diversity, equity, and inclusion with a fun and delicious spin on concepts.
  • Building Resilience** | 1 - 3 p.m. | MU Ballroom/Preston/Skyline
    Students will have the chance to participate in many different activities including building a terrarium for an air plant and putting together a wellness tote which includes health and wellness necessitates. Students will also make Zines where they will get the chance to create visual content celebrating their interests, passions, culture, and identity. Hosts include Student Wellness and Diversity, Equity & Inclusion.
  • PALs Meet & Greet | 3 - 4 p.m. | MU Skyline
    Want to meet someone who knows the ropes on what it means to be a college student at ESU? Meet current ESU students, PALs (Peer Academic Leaders) who will help you navigate the firsts of college life. Join us for root beer floats and make a plan to meet up with your PAL throughout the semester!
  • Get Rec’d** | 9 - 11 p.m. | Student Recreation Center
    Want to know what the Student Recreation Center is all about? Find out more about group fitness, weights, and intramurals and other activities provided by the SRC. Meet the Rec Center staff who will provide demos about upcoming classes. There will be plenty of yard games to play and if you have never tried Silent Disco, now is your chance! FREE pizza too!

MONDAY, AUGUST 19

  • Part-Time Job Fair | 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. | MU Main Street
    Need a job? ESU’s Career Services is hosting a part-time job fair for you! On and off campus employers will be in person so you can ask questions about jobs on site.
  • Block Party | 5:30 - 7 p.m. | Commercial Street
    Welcome back ESU students! Join us for a fun night out in the 600 & 700 Blocks of Commercial Street. Students do not need tickets to attend - just show up! There will be music, prizes and information on student organizations and local businesses and groups!
    Each participating business will be donating a door prize of at least $25! Students are encouraged to stop by the Emporia Main Street Tent in the intersection on 7th Ave to sign up for prizes- We are NOT doing passports but doing an electronic sign in! We will draw for prizes the following day via Facebook Live. Winners will need to pick up their prize at the designated location. Sponsored by Emporia Main Street.

    Join us for the first Friday Nights event at Champions Landing, 1801 Rural Street! FREE hamburgers, hot dogs, prizes, line dancing, golf, disc golf, fishing and a pool side seat to a cannonball competition! Our own President Hush will show us his best cannonball at the Champion Landing pool!

Emporia State University and your downtown  Emporia merchants invite you to bring the whole family down to enjoy food and drinks from local vendors, live music from the Undercover Band, meet and greet Hornet players, coaches, Corky, the ESU Cheer and Dance Team and a performance from the ESU Marching Hornets.
Plus, we've invited area high school coaches and teams to join in the kickoff party!
We'll have tons of activities, prizes, great giveaways including Hornet Football season tickets, a photo booth and exhibitions from Hornet student-athletes
