Wednesday, June 1 thru Friday, June 3, 2016 – Coaching a Hope Mindset Conference. This 3-day collaborative conference will focus on the language, learning, and leadership needed to promote a hope mindset in every classroom. In keeping with the Kansas State Board of Education and the Kansas Department of Education’s new initiative regarding student success participants will explore the research-based Hope Strategies. These strategies, when combined with proven language skills, can accelerate hope in all K-12 students. Monday, June 6, 2016 – Mental Skills & Drills for Athletes; Tuesday, June 7, 2016 – Mental Skills & Drills for Coaches. Just like physical training, mental training must be worked on diligently and systematically. Mental skills are often not an important component of training because few athletes and coaches are formally exposed to mental skills and drills. This workshop will provide specific components that will develop the mental side of performance. Specific drills will be provided that will help the participants develop a systemic approach to developing mental skills. Presenter: Dr. Mark Stanbrough, director of the Emporia State University Coaching Education program, one of only 10 accredited coaching education programs in the nation. Tuesday, June 7, 2016 – Let’s Give Them Something to Write About! – for K-8 classroom teachers, instructional coaches, and administrators. This highly practical workshop is designed specifically for K-8 educators to help students be successful writers. The focus will be on providing teachers with innovative and ready-to-use strategies to help your students gain mastery of the range of skills and applications specified in the state standards. Presenter: Dr. Melissa Reed, associate professor of literacy education at Emporia State University.
Thursday, June 9, 2016 – Building with RaspberryPi – for grades K-12 educators. The RaspberryPi is a tiny computer smaller than a pack of cards, which can transform the way we perceive and approach computation. This workshop will introduce the basic components of the RaspberryPi and how they relate to a traditional computer. This small computer is programmable to create interactive problem-based lessons for students. The workshop will consist of two parts: Understanding the Fundamentals of RaspberryPi and Developing Two Interactive Pi projects. Presenter: Dr. Anna Catterson, Educational Technology Coordinator in the department of Information Technology at Emporia State University.
Tuesday, June 21, 2016 – Welcome to Our World - Teaching and Assessing Social Studies in the Secondary Classroom – for secondary social studies teachers. As Kansas Social Studies teachers implement the Kansas History, Government and Social Studies (HGSS) Standards adopted in 2013, they face many issues: What do the standards look like in practice? How can I implement the standards across the curriculum? What assistance will students need to transition from the specificity of the deltas to the new assessment? This workshop will address these questions and help equip teachers to effectively work with the new standards. Presenters: Kori Green and Adam Topliff. Green is in her eighth year of teaching at El Dorado Middle School where she has taught both 7th and 8th grade social studies. Topliff has been the eighth grade Social Studies teacher at Wamego Middle School for nine years.
