ESU Debate Duo Ranked in Top Third after Semester

The ESU debate duo of Issie Engelbert and Arriq Singleton concluded the fall semester of competition ranked 31 out of the top 100 partnerships in college debate. The college debate rankings were released on Nov. 14 and are based on head-to-head outcomes of debate rounds.

Engelbert and Singleton spent the weekend of Nov. 10 in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, competing at the largest and most challenging major national competition of the semester hosted by Wake Forest University. Students from 55 different colleges and universities from 26 states participated in the tournament.

They boasted an impressive 5-3 record in the preliminary debates, besting opponents from Emory University, Kansas State University, University of Missouri – Kansas City, University of Michigan and University of Kansas. Although they narrowly missed qualifying to the elimination rounds on a tie-breaker, they finished in 35th place overall in a field of over 133 entries.

Engelbert and Singleton also received special acknowledgement over the weekend as debate’s first semester national ratings were published. The top 100 partnerships were recognized, and Emporia State ES earned the 31st overall spot.
