MS - HPEC

Course Requirements

The Masters of Science in HPEC has two options: thesis and non-thesis.

- The thesis option is a 32-credit hour program which includes 20 credits of required classes and 12 credits of student-selected electives.

- The non-thesis option is a 33-credit hour program which includes 18 credits of required classes and 15 credits of student-selected electives.

Note: This program was previously called the master's in health, physical education, and recreation and appears as such in the 2022-23 ESU Catalog; there may be some course titles in the catalog that do not match with information on this web site.Please contact the graduate advisor, Dr. Dennis McCormick, AdvisorHPEC@emporia.edu with any questions you may have.

Required/Core Classes: 17 credits

  • PE 707: Applied Psychology in Health, Physical Education, and Coaching
  • PE 768: Advanced Exercise Physiology
  • PE 858: Ethics in Health, Physical Education, and Coaching
  • PE 865: Statistics in Health, Physical Education, and Coaching
  • PE 869: Thesis (5 credits)

MS- HPEC, NON-THESIS

Required/Core Classes: 12 credits

  • PE 707: Applied Psychology in Health, Physical Education, and Coaching
  • PE 768: Advanced Exercise Physiology
  • PE 858: Ethics in Health, Physical Education, and Coaching
  • PE 868: Masters Project (only in spring and fall; never summer)

Elective Courses

The elective course rotation is dependent upon faculty availability, as well as budgeted summer compensation.

Elective courses are typically offered at least twice over the three semesters (fall, spring, summer) of an academic year. Each semester elective classes are offered to match student demand.
